A Toronto-based biotech company is teaming up with the Michael J. Fox Foundation, strapping smartwatches on Parkinson’s patients to test their data-gathering capabilities during a clinical trial.
Cynapsus Therapeutics Inc. is developing a treatment for sudden muscle rigidity known as “off episodes,” which about 60 per cent of Parkinson’s patients experience, sometimes several times a day. The company is in the final stages of testing a soluble sheet that can be placed under the tongue to deliver medicine, helping patients recover faster and more comfortably. Currently, the only approved treatment for off episodes is a painful injection.
